In a unique achievement, the Fragrance Group-owned ibis Styles Hobart Hotel has been named as Australia’s first and only 5-Star Green Star certified hotel.

The prestigious recognition, awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), represents Australian Excellence in environmentally sustainable building practices and showcases the developer’s and hotel’s commitment to and leadership in sustainability and innovation.

The 5-Star Green Star certification covers both design and construction, demonstrating that the design content has been incorporated into the final project. Fragrance Group says the recognition acknowledges the developer’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Fragrance Group also recognises that achievement is the result of a team effort involving the architect and consultants, the builder (Hutchinson Builders) and the operator (AccorHotels) to make it all happen.

Project architect Peter Scott of Tasmanian firm Xsquared architects said the award reflected the building owner Fragrance Group’s commitment to environmental building performance and end-of-life waste management.

Mr Scott said areas of sustainability addressed included the implementation of a climate adaptation plan and the use of a construction stage environmental management system and reduced volumes of construction and demolition waste sent to landfill.

The building also features the elimination of air pollutants, high quality acoustic performance, high quality lighting performance, glare reduction and light pollution reduction. Low chemical paint, adhesives, sealants, carpets and wood products and responsibly sourced steel, timber and PVC products had been used in the construction.

Mr Scott said the result was that ibis Styles Hobart Hotel offered high levels of thermal comfort and energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared with similar buildings, high levels of water efficiency and reduced stormwater discharge plus the filtering of stormwater to remove pollutants

The Green Star certification followed the naming of ibis Styles Hobart as the Gold winner in the standard accommodation category of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania’s 2018 Tasmanian Tourism Awards.

The win will see the hotel progress as a finalist in the 2018 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, to be announced in March 2019.

General Manager of ibis Styles Hobart, Janine Livingston said: “Receiving the awards provides a huge boost and tremendous recognition for the entire hotel team and all who have played a role in its successful operation since opening in July last year, from the owners Fragrance Group, Hutchinson Builders, AccorHotels and the ibis Styles team. We couldn’t be more proud.

“We are so thankful to our owners Fragrance Group who have worked hard to develop a sensitive and sustainable tourism product which is also proving to be a great drawcard for Hobart’s visitor economy and providing local employment opportunities for our community.”
